George Crocker

George Crocker was born in San Francisco in 1856, son of Charles Crocker, the builder of the Central Pacific Railroad. In 1888, the elder Crocker left an estate of $30 Million to his four children, with George receiving $6 Million, provided he "continuously abstained from the use of spirituous, vinous, and malt liquors" for a period of five years. George moved to New York City where he opened an office to operate and expand the family businesses including banks, railroads, chemical, sugar, gas, coal, iron and land companies. He served as a board member of various banking houses, directed the Wells Fargo Company and the Trust Company of America, and was Vice President of the family owned Southern Pacific Railroad. The Crocker's maintained a townhouse at 1 East 64th Street in New York City and a summer villa in Newport.
